MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -- Flames are coming from the roof of a packaging plant near the Middle Georgia Regional Airport. Pactiv, a paper plant which primarily makes recycled egg cartons caught fire. Workers say the fire started around 6 o'clock Wednesday morning.
Workers started to fight the fire, but couldn't contain it. Firefighters showed up and tried to contain the fire from inside the building, but were unsuccessful. They were forced to evacuate and battle the flames from outside of the facility.
Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said, "We'll be fighting it all day."
Riggins said the fire started in the egg carton manufacturing area, the process of making egg cartons is a hot process, but the cause of the fire is still unknown. He is worried about walls collapsing and expects several more explosions throughout the day due to the highly flammable and explosive materials inside the building.
According to Riggins, 50 to 60 firefighters are on the scene. The workers at the plant have been trained on keeping fires contained due to the nature of the facility. This is not the first fire at the plant, but Riggins said it is the worst.
41NBC is on the scene and will have updates as they become available on 41NBC and 41NBC.com.
