MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A 5-year-old girl is dead after she was hit by a Bibb County School bus while crossing the street.
Shonetta Jackson was on her way to pick up her sons when she saw Tamiya Watson lying in the street. Jackson leaped out of her car and ran over to Watson and held the little girl's hand until the ambulance arrived.
"I tried to make sure she was still conscious," Jackson said.
Watson was a kindergartner at Barden Elementary. She was walking home from school when she was hit at the intersection of Bloomfield Road and Virginia Drive, it was just feet away from her home.
"We're just still in shock," said Watson's uncle Willie, "you can only imagine what we're going through."
According to Macon police, Watson was struck by the rear tires. Bibb County coroner Leon Jones said she died from blunt force trauma.
The incident happened a little before 4 p.m. on Monday, two witnesses tell 41NBC they saw the bus driver on a cell phone right before the accident. Police have not confirmed that information.
