MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Fans of country music got a big surprise Friday. Artist Blake Shelton is playing a free concert in Macon! The news came following a tweet he sent earlier today, which made die- hard fans drop everything and head to the venue, Whisky River on Pio Nono Avenue.
The star is doing this free concert as part of a series that's been kept under wraps by his publicists. He apparently loves to surprise people. He's one of the four judges on 'The Voice' which premieres Monday on 41NBC.
Early Friday afternoon, he tweeted "That's it!!! I have got to do another free country music celebration. Macon, Georgia. YOU!!!! Whiskey River tonight!! Be there..." His wife, country star Miranda Lambert played here just last week with Dierks Bentley. According to his Twitter page, he played another free concert in Greenville, South Carolina Thursday night.
41NBC caught up with some of the first people in line at Whiskey River...who are some of Blake's self-proclaimed biggest fans.
"If you're not here you're missing out!," said second person in line Jenna Jones, who put an alert on her Twitter account for whenever Shelton Tweets anything. One woman we spoke with left work early just to get be the first in line.
41NBC also spoke with the owner of Whiskey River, Ernie Shepherd, who told us they are very excited about tonight's show. They've known about it for about a month, but t they had to keep tight-lipped about it until Friday. The concert is free--you just need cash for drinks and food.
The show starts at 8:30 and goes until 12:30. Doors open at 6.
