MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Northeast High School renamed its field house after former football star Albert 'Al' Lucas.

Lucas was a star player at Troy University and a former Carolina Panther and Pittsburg Steeler. He died in 2005, while playing arena football for the Los Angeles Avengers.

For family members, the building serves as a memorial and a reminder of the young man, who died doing what he loved.

"It is helping us to heal or at least live with this tremendous loss" said his mother, Elaine Lucas, "but we are just thrilled."

Lucas is the late son of State Senator David Lucas and Macon City Councilwoman Elaine Lucas.
