MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A high speed chase starting in Houston County ended when a jeep lost control and hit a building.
Warner Robins police spokesperson Tabitha Pugh tells 41 NBC the police department issued a "be on the lookout" alert for a yellow jeep that was reported stolen around 6 p.m. Wednesday off Park Avenue. Officers spotted the car off North Davis. They attempted a traffic stop, but the driver took off on State Road 247 heading towards Macon.
Pugh says the officers did not initiate the chase. Bibb County sheriff's deputies pursued the car when they realized there was a BOLO out for for it. The driver turned off Houston Avenue, lost control of the car, and crashed into a restaurant column.
Derrick Ashley owns Ashley's Ribs and Sub, which is set to open next week in that building. He says he usually sells food outside, but not on Wednesday.
"Normally I'm out here on this corner selling, but today we made family day and I decided not to come," Ashley said. "I thank God that we didn't come because we would have been right in the line of the accident."
Pugh says the suspect was injured and taken to the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
The suspect is in custody. Police have not released the driver's identity.
