MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - A local fraternity collects more than 5,000 pounds of canned food over the weekend.
Last Friday, brothers at Mercer University's chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha put out thousands of brown paper bags on the doorsteps of homes around Macon.
On Sunday, the chapter's 24 members collected all the bags and brought them back to their house for inspection.
The food, plus money donations, benefit the international fraternity's philanthropy, the North American Food Drive.
"We'll have alumni come back and actually help us participate in the event just to get more bags spread out through Macon and a wider variety of areas," says the chapter's vice president, Zach Hoffman. "A lot of people are very enthusiastic about us doing this and are more than willing to help out. That definitely helps everything go more smoothly."
Last year, the chapter brought in 7,000 pounds of food, and this year they expect to double that number to 14,000--more than six tons.
They expect to deliver the food from this past weekend to the Middle Georgia Food Bank by the end of this week.
