MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The new year just kicked off and keeping your resolutions are probably going well.
But how can you keep them going all year long?
A new year means a new you. Many people set goals they hope to keep throughout the year, but most of the time our resolutions fade away with the fireworks.
"I think that the biggest pitfall or mistake people will make is they try to take on too much too fast," Don Tillman, social services coordinator for the Coliseum Center for Behavioral Health, said.
Whether its losing weight, exercising more, or eating healthier, Tillman says you should do it a little bit at a time.
"Small changes and not try to accomplish too much too soon because that tends to be discouraging and we tend to beat ourselves up about not being able to do that," he said.
A popular resolution is to hit the gym. Owner of the Pink Physique in Macon, Allie Kerr, says one way to stick to your goal is to give yourself a deadline.
"Pick a date, pick a deadline and that will keep you focused," Kerr said. "We need something to keep us focused and something to shoot for."
She also encourages you to not give up when the going gets tough.
"There's going to be obstacles along the way and as long as we know that going in, just know to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and just get right back on it," she said.
Both Tillman and Kerr also suggest you build a support group to help you reach your goal. Also, don't forget to reward yourself when you accomplish it.
