MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office charged a suspect for the murder of a Newton County man found dead on the side of the road in Milledgeville early Wednesday morning.
Baldwin County Sheriff Captain Brad King says deputies arrested 25-year-old Artenimus Ray Mack and charged him with murder. Mack is from Washington County but was living in Gwinnett County when deputies arrested him as a person of interest on Thursday.
Mack is booked in the Baldwin County jail with no bond.
King says the investigation is ongoing and there is a possibility the sheriff's office will be seeking other suspects.
Investigators identified the victim as 30-year-old Travin Montez Davis of Covington. Deputies say he was shot twice in the chest. Sheriff Bill Massee believes the shooting happened somewhere else and then the body was later dumped in a ditch off Treanor Drive near the Oconee River. A resident spotted the body as she was leaving her home.
Investigators processed a gold Mercury Sable that was registered to Mack's wife for evidence. They are also processing a recovered firearm. Authorities believe this was a drug transaction that went wrong.
King credits the hard work of several law enforcement agencies including Newton County Sheriff's Office, Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, Washington County Sheriff's Office, and the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
