FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Peaches are probably Georgia's sweetest, juiciest, and most popular export.
So we wanted to know--just how far does that unique Georgia flavor go?
Recently, I visited Lane Southern Orchards to find out.
"We ship peaches as far north as Canada and as far west as Colorado," says Duke Lane III, Vice President of Sales at Lane's.
Those are just peaches ordered in large amounts, like orders placed by supermarkets. But when it comes to Lane's mail-order business:
"We have customers as far away as Washington state," says Lane. "So geographically, we pretty much cover the entire country."
Kirsten Andreoni, from Wisconsin, says she recently saw a box of Lane's peaches in her hometown grocery store.
"And I just kind of smiled and I told my husband, 'We have to get these peaches because they're from Lane'," says Andreoni. "We actually looked at the boxes and purchased them because of that."
So why is it that people from all over the country prefer Georgia peaches over any other?
"They're so.. they're sweeter," says Andreoni. "They're sweet and soft. They're not hard. I don't have to put them in a brown paper bag to ripen them up."
"They're sweeter, juicier," says Marie Rugenstein of Michigan.
"Georgia is known as the Peach State for that fabulous flavor," says Lane. "I call it the unique Georgia peach flavor profile."
Peaches aren't the only things traveling long distances. Visitors come from all over the country to see Lane's packing facilities here in Peach County. Andreoni says it's a family thing.
"We like to come to have the kids look at how the peaches are packaged," says Andreoni. "Kind of to see how it's made or how it's done, so they can see the box that we purchased is the same box that came from here."
Over 100,000 peaches leave Lane's packing facility every day, so next time you're on the road and have a craving for a sweet Georgia peach, you might be able to find one just around the corner.
If you're interested in visiting Lane's, the packing facility and retail store is located five miles west of I-75 off Exit 142. For more information, call 800-27-PEACH.
