MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Three Macon Police officers are out of a job tonight...and two of them are facing criminal charges.
Just after 5:00pm Wednesday, Macon Police announced that officer Freddie Fountain is facing termination for violating his oath of office and sexual assault of a person in custody. An investigation revealed that a shoplifting suspect talked her way out of getting arrested by offering to have sex with the officer. Police say he drove the woman to his apartment, where they had sex. She was not charged, but another woman arrested with her was.
Officer William Stewart, who also responded to that shoplifting call, is also being fired for violating city ordinance. He admitted he knew what officer Officer Fountain had done, and was dishonest when internal affairs officers questioned him. He does not face any criminal charges.
In a separate incident- Police say Officer Anthony Cason kept a 40-inch television that was mistakenly delivered to his apartment. UPS tracking information led police to his home, and when they searched the place, they found the TV and he admitted what happened. He's charged with theft by taking.
Internal Affairs Captain Jimmy Barbee said in a news release- "At the Macon Police Department, we are family, but we police ourselves. We are not above the law and never will be. This is a sad day for these three men and a teaching moment for MPD."
