Tucker Elementary in Perry Celebrating World Recognition for Leadership Program

Tonight, the Tucker Tigers are celebrating. The Houston County elementary school is the first in the state of Georgia to achieve "Lighthouse" status.

This is the highest honor after completion of the "Leader in Me" program, aimed at leadership training through the use of Franklin Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People."

"The level of leadership has steadily increased, and I think the kids feel empowered," says teacher, Meredith Fletcher.

The process took the school three years to complete, and they're one of only 21 in the world to be named a Lighthouse School. It's a huge accomplishment for the students and staff.

"It's a whole new way of looking at school for kids... It gives students, puts them in the drivers seat of their academic success,"says principal, Dr. Kim Halstead.

Dr. Halstead says the kids have really stepped up to the challenge of becoming leaders. They're responsible for morning announcements, and giving school tours. As she says, "they run the school."
