MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)-Last year, Students at Alexander II Magnet School created a tree nursery in the playgroung area and this year, students along with several volunteers from Kohl's will help try to stop erosion problems on the side of the gym.
"The whole idea of this is to help our kids, learn ways they can help with the environment, " said Alexander II Environmental Committee Member, Ron Lemon.
"I'm planting a tree down, digging using a rake or something, to scrape the dirt back to the hole, so we can plant more trees out here, " said Alexander II student Kyle Nunnemaker.
Alexander II students are learning to protect the Environment, and they are also helping the school prevent further damage to the school's gym.
"This is an area that was neglected and we had some drainage problems and as the kids would come off the playground they had to move through wet areas and track that in the gym," said Lemon.
"It's helping the community to do work that needs to be done, " said Nunnemaker.
"We are working on storm water run off, we are doing a recycling program with a rain barrel, planting some tree's, mulching the playground, we got a beehive of activity here today," said Lemon.
Students, Volunteers, and teachers, are in the process of building a walk way for the kids to use when they walk along the side of the gym. The Walk way will be completed by the end of the summer.
