Today was the last day to qualify to run for Macon City Council and Macon Mayor. There were a few surprise candidates in the last few hours. Local writer Chris Horne put his name on the ballot to run against Elaine Lucas.
"Well she's been there 24 years, anything she's wanted to do she could have done by now. I don't think you can drive through East Macon and feel like the works done."
Lucas says she believes Horne's sudden interest in running against her stems from multiple conspirators.
"I have it on good authority that Andrew Blascovich who is running Mayor Reichert's campaign, and Chris Horne as well as the mayor and folks with the Republican Party who are on Council have collaborated on identifying candidates to run against those of us on council who have not always voted along with this mayor."
Horne says there's no one pushing his campaign.
"I could not let anybody talk me into this, it's ridiculous."
In addition to Horne, 23 year old Danny Glover announced he will challenge incumbent Tom Ellington for the Ward 3, Post 3 seat. He's already hit the streets in an attempt to crack down on crime.
"What I've been doing since May 12th is meeting with a lot of the gang members in the city and the thing is, we haven't been talking to them. We've been dictating from 700 Poplar Street for the last 23 years of my life."
City Council members all qualified to run for their current seats. Miriam Paris will not run for re-election. Seven of the incumbents will face opponents.
