Meet the Candidates in Run Off Election for Wilcox County Sheriff

ABBEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - The race for Wilcox County sheriff isn't over yet. It's now down to a run-off between Republican Mike Martin and Democrat Lonnie Curry.

The race for Wilcox County's newest sheriff is almost over. First on the ballot is Republican Mike Martin.

"I think I can do the job that needs to be done," Martin said.

Martin has 20 years of law enforcement. As sheriff, he plans to tackle the county's growing drug problem by bringing back the C.H.A.M.P.S. education program and drug task force.

"We've got to educate our young people about the dangers of drugs," Martin said. "You got to make them know it's a bad thing and educate them on that."

He also wants to revamp the sheriff's department's image.

"Just being where the citizens of the county can get in touch and get the help they need from the sheriff's department and respect and trust in their sheriff department. I think you've got to have that," he said.

The other name on the ballot is Democrat Lonnie Curry.

"I love Wilcox County and I want to be the next sheriff for Wilcox County," Curry said.

Curry has worked in law enforcement for 30 years. He also wants to fix the county's drug problem and bring back a sense of safety for the residents.

"Get the drugs off the streets and make Wilcox County a safe place where people won't be afraid to go out at night," he said.

He says he's the man who can get residents to trust the sheriff's department again.

"I want to bring change to Wilcox County, get it like it needs to be," Curry said.

The race for the new sheriff comes after former sheriff Stacey Bloodsworth pleaded guilty to assaulting an inmate inside the Wilcox County jail.

The run-off election is scheduled for December 4th.
