Gun Fires in Dublin High School
A sophomore at Dublin High School brought a loaded gun to school Monday and it fired, hurting another student. It happened around 1:00 PM.
Police say the student brought a loaded 9 mm pistol to school in his backpack and was trying to unload it when it accidentally fired. When the gun went off, a bullet hit the floor but a piece of shrapnel hit another student's leg. Luckily, it only left a bruise.
The school was immediately locked down after the incident. Police took a 10th grade boy into custody. He told police he was threatened by a group of people at a party this past weekend and brought the gun to school in case he needed it for self-defense.
"The fact that there was a weapon in our school is a very serious thing. The fact a gun discharged is a very serious matter. We want to make sure our students are safe and we want to make sure our students feel safe because there's no learning if that doesn't take place," said Dr. Chuck Ledbetter, Superintendent of Dublin City Schools.
The boy is being held at a juvenile detention center. The investigation is ongoing, but he will likely be charged with having a gun on schoolgrounds.
Ledbetter told 41 NBC News that students will be scanned with metal detectors at Dublin High School Tuesday, and he wants the metal detectors to be permanent.
