Nation's 1st primary sets stage for Ill. showdown
The first primary election of 2010 will decide which Illinois Democrats get to defend the governor's office and a Senate seat against Republicans eyeing Democratic infighting and scandal.
Six Republicans are seeking the nomination for governor. All promise to slash spending and clean up Illinois government after last year's impeachment of Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Meanwhile, the Democratic primary has been filled with harsh attacks. New Gov. Pat Quinn wants a full term, but he's been labeled weak and incompetent by Comptroller Dan Hynes.
The Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama also is on the ballot.
Rep. Mark Kirk has dominated that Republican race. State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO'-lee-us) leads polls on the
Democratic side, but has several challengers.
