Latvia to accept 1 Guantanamo inmate
Latvia's government says it will accept one
inmate from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay.
The Foreign Ministry says the detainee originally comes from
Central Asia and that this will help him adapt to Latvia since both
are part of the former Soviet Union.
The ministry said Tuesday that the prisoner could arrive within
the next six months.
Latvia is a close U.S. ally and one of several European nations
- including France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia and
Spain - that in recent months have agreed to accept detainees from
Guantanamo.
The White House had pledged to close the prison in January but
missed the deadline.
