Adopt-A-Highway Program Brings Savings to Twiggs County

The Twiggs County Chamber of Commerce takes a stand against litter in this week's Going Green, Saving Green edition of Middle Georgia Pride.
It's all in an effort to get community groups and local businesses to help keep the highways clean.
In between mile marker 18 and 19 on Highway 80 in Jeffersonville the road is a lot cleaner than you might expect.
"We have to compete with all the local counties in the area, and we want to put the best foot forward for Twiggs County. In order to do that we need to make sure that our highways are clean" says Virginia Villatoro with the Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber joined the Adopt-A-Highway program and recently partnered up with the Wolf Creek Landfill.
"We wanted to do this project to promote public awareness and maybe take a little burden off the tax payers of the community," says spokesperson for Wolf Creek Landfill Adam Cochran.
Wolf Creek Landfill employees clean the one mile stretch of highway once a week, which is more than 10 times the amount required by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The chamber has a goal of having at least 10 miles adopted by the end of the year.
