The U.S. Postal Service managed to get through yesterday's mailing crunch, after predicting on its Web site that some 830 million pieces of mail would be put into the system on Dec. 14 alone.

The Postal Service says yesterday will likely be its busiest mailing day of the year, representing an increase of more than 40 percent over the average daily volume of 583 million pieces of mail.

At United Parcel Service, officials say they're expecting to handle some 400 million packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas, up slightly from last year. UPS spokeswoman Karen Cole says Dec. 21 will be their busiest day, when they estimate some 22 million packages will be delivered.
