O'Neal reveals IRS audit
A candidate to be speaker of the House in Georgia revealed that he was the focus of an IRS probe related to tax legislation he sponsored which benefited Gov. Sonny Perdue.
In a letter to the Republican House caucus obtained by The Associated Press, Rep. Larry O'Neal said the "IRS sent a team of federal auditors to conduct a full forensic audit of every aspect" of the Perdue tax break after the 2006 election.
O'Neal said it was "a multi-week, full-blown, on-site examination" which exonerated him.
In 2005, O'Neal - who worked as Perdue's lawyer - sponsored a bill that saved the governor about $100,000 in taxes on land he purchased in Florida. Perdue signed the bill in April 2005 but says he did not know he would benefit.
