Obama Talks With Bank Execs Today
Aides say he'll press big banks to stop trying to block new financial regulations, cut down bonuses, do more to prevent foreclosures and boost lending to small businesses.
More lending will spur jobs, administration officials calling that the top priority.
Christina Romer, Chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisors said, "On the jobs side, everybody knows you're never going to get your budget deficit under control if you don't get the economy growing again."
Republicans share the goal.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "Unemployment is the key."
But they resist Democrats' plans to divert paid-back bailout money to a jobs bill.
Citigroup is nearing a deal to be the last big bank to return its bailout billions.
