More Furloughs Coming to Wilcox County Schools
Smaller school districts are already operating on lean budgets this year, but the Wilcox County school system says if the Governor pulls more state money, it will have nothing else to cut.
That's why Wilcox County School Superintendent Steve Smith requested the school board take a proactive measure.
It unanimously approved furloughing teachers for three additional days in 2010 and ending the student school year by two days.
Smith, says school employees support the idea because it means cutting costs without cutting jobs for now.
Smith is lobbying with other small school districts for lawmakers to pass a state-wide one-cent sales tax for education. He also wants the state to allow school districts to pass a sales tax for operational costs and not just school construction.
Smith says Wilcox County schools are also considering a four-day school week, similar to schools in Peach County.
