The House of Representatives has voted to end abrupt spikes in volume heard by U.S. television viewers during commercial breaks.

The measure is aimed at stopping TV ads from playing noticeably louder than programs.

An identical measure has been introduced in the Senate.

The government had not had much say in the volume of TV ads. It has been getting complaints about commercial loudness for decades.
