NOAA Still Expects Active Atlantic Hurricane Season

Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the whole season – June 1 to November 30 – NOAA’s updated outlook is projecting, with a 70 percent probability, a total of (including Alex, Bonnie and Colin):

 

  • 14 to 20 named storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including:
  •  8 to 12 hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which:
  •  4 to 6 could be major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph)

 

These ranges are still indicative of an active season, compared to the average of 11 named storms,

South Dakota Storm Produces Record Hailstone

NOAA’s National Climate Extremes Committee, responsible for validating national weather records, has declared a hailstone found last week in Vivian, S.D., to be the largest in diameter and heaviest ever recovered in the United States.
 
Found after a July 23, 2010, severe thunderstorm by Vivian resident Les Scott, the hailstone is 8.0 inches in diameter and weighs 1.9375 pounds (1 pound, 15 ounces) with a circumference of 18.62 inches.
These measurements displace the previous hailstone record for weight, previously 1.67 pounds for a stone in Coffeyville, Kan., in 1970.

Warmest June Ever Recored on Earth

Last month’s combined global land and ocean surface temperature made it the warmest June on record and the warmest on record averaged for any April-June and January-June periods, according to NOAA.

July 13th Record Rainfall in Macon

On Tuesday, July 13, 2010 a record daily maximum rainfall was set at the airport in Macon. In total, 4.47” of rainfall was measured which shattered the old record of 1.73” of rainfall that was measured back in 1971.

Bibb County Siren Testing

Starting today and lasting through Friday, the Bibb County Emergency Management Agency will be testing the tornado sirens everyday at 11am. The sirens will sound for approximately 1 minute. Keep in mind that this is just a test, so there's no need to be alarmed. The EMA is just making sure the sirens are in proper working order, and fixing any problems there may be.
